Digital Leadership:

What is Digital Leadership? What distinguishes it?
And what are the differences between Management and Leadership?

There is an infinite number of articles and literature on this and the demarcation is constantly in flux. We would like to summarize some core statements for you here.

Digital leadership organizes, accompanies and supports digital change through changing and constantly evolving approaches in terms of leadership, self-organization, participation, co-determination and teamwork. In this context, agile and lean management are often mentioned as helpful methods. In the leadership context, the manager is above all an accompanying and meaningful role model, coach and enabler who leads laterally (associated). In the management context, the manager is primarily a decision-maker who leads by hierarchy, instructions and control.

Leadership focuses more on the development of employees towards self-determination, self-organization, self-management (concept of inspect and adapt). Management focuses more on hierarchies, management, processes, instructions and control (concept of command and control). Digital transformation therefore requires a change in attitude (mind-set) concerning leadership, individual and team work, working methods and tools. Management, executives, their employees and teams can work together on this change. We are happy to support you with targeted, individual training, workshops or temporary, intensive support.

Agility:

Is a project management method, a highly flexible way of working, which is used primarily in and around software development and increasingly in other areas as well. It requires the courage to allow and implement new work structures and forms of collaboration.

Above all, it is a departure from the common understanding of leadership and teamwork, of learning, of culture of error and trust. It is a step “away from” hierarchical management structures (command-control) “towards” lateral leadership. In this case, leadership fulfills a guardrail function for its self-organized teams and only checks and adapts when necessary (inspect-adapt).

Agility is characterized by the following core elements:

  • Employee orientation
  • Iterative process landscapes
  • Agile HR and management tools
  • Flexible and learning organizational structure and culture

In order to cross an ocean with agile methods, it requires more than stable, weatherproof ships. It also requires a flexible captain with great trust in the crew, supportive and team-oriented crew members, a common understanding of goals, a spirit of learning, discovery and perseverance!

In short: An ocean crossing is not for everyone. And the same applies to digital leadership and agility. Indeed, they do not suit every company, every department or every team.
